PROJECT MATA HATI - LUNCHEON & ART EXHIBITION 2013

The first half of 2013 saw a flurry of activity by Project Mata Hati, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project by Group Technical Services (GTS), under MISC Outreach Programme, in collaboration with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas (Cacat Penglihatan) Setapak.

Project Mata Hati sees to the needs of visually impaired students from SMPK Setapak by helping the school achieve its aspiration of being a world class institution for the blind and visually impaired, through ongoing programmes that explore and enhance the hidden potential of these students.

To raise funds for this purpose, the annual Charity Luncheon was held on the 11th May 2013, followed by an Art Exhibition entitled ‘Heart on Wheels’ from the 21st  to 23rd  June 2013.

The students had a fun filled day at the Charity Luncheon, as they were entertained with activities throughout the morning, before the Luncheon finally kicked off at noon. This time around, all 142 students from the school attended the event and were given the opportunity to meet sponsors and supporters that have pledged to aid the visually impaired youths through Project Mata Hati. In return, the students put their best foot forward with exciting performances which included a Dikir Barat and a Live Band show among others.

The Art Exhibition held at the Annexe Gallery, Central Market, further showcased the diversity of the students’ talents. In a charity drive prior to the exhibition, these visually impaired students were given the opportunity to ride in a supercar, courtesy of the supercar fraternity, The Blue Jackets Society. Despite their disability, the students fully utilised their other senses – touch, smell and hearing - to soak up this rare experience and then express it through art. How do they choose colours they’ve never seen? This glimpse into how they ‘see’ things in their mind was what set the “Heart on Wheels” exhibition apart from the rest.

Project Mata Hati would like to extend their gratitude to everyone involved in the Charity Luncheon and the Art Exhibition. Rest assured your time, money and support has gone to a good cause. Interested donors can contribute by making a personal donation, purchase artwork or by attending/volunteering for future events. Charity Luncheon is Coming Soon

School Background

Founded in 1974, Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Setapak (SMPKS) has been serving as a boarding school for the blind and visually impaired (BVI) students. Currently we house 144 students, comprising of students from form 1 to form 5. Despite the visual challenges that they have, the students undergo normal syllabus as other mainstream schools. They sit for PMR and SPM, just like the other normal students. Many of them managed to become successful individuals and make significant contribution to the country.

Vision

Our school aspires to be a World Class Institution for Blind Visually Impaired (BVI) in the future. We have always been supportive of this relentless pursuit of happiness. We would like to work towards a brighter future for our students and this cannot be done alone. Thus, we plead for support and collaboration from all members of the society to join us in this remarkable journey.

Objective

Group Technical Services (GTS) of MISC Bhd, Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas (Cacat Penglihatan) Setapak and University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) have collaborated to set up a joint trust account, which the account is kept at UPSI. All the fund raised through this luncheon will go to this joint trust account, of which will be monitored closely by all three (3) parties, i.e. GTS, the school and UPSI. This will eventually enhance the programs identified for the development of the students.

We have embarked with this project last year (2011) in various forms of development programs where we have seen success from the students, i.e. art lesson & exhibition, Japanese language class, sports day etc.

How You Can Help...

There are three ways of helping that you can offer:

  1. Partnership – by participating in our programs
  2. Sponsorship – monetary form by buying luncheon seats
  3. Heartfelt Donation – by donating any amount of money to the school

There is no restriction on how you can help them. All we see is POSSIBILITY.
